The UN Security Council is set to vote on tougher sanctions on North Korea on Saturday, local time,.. to punish the regime for its two ICBM tests last month.
The vote is set for 3pm in New York City,... so we should know by Sunday morning, Korea time,... whether or not the resolution has been approved.
Oh Soo-young reports.
After weeks of grueling negotiations,... the United States has been successful in its push for a UN Security Council vote on a set of stronger sanctions against the North Korean regime for its missile provocations.
The draft resolution,... introduced by Washington, consists of restrictions on North Korea's exports of coal, lead, iron and seafood.
If properly implemented,... the measures could potentially deprive North Korea of one billion U.S. dollars in annual export revenue.
The new sanctions would also prevent Pyongyang from sending laborers to other countries such as China and Russia,... dealing a further blow to the cash-poor regime's foreign currency earnings.
Assets of nine individuals and four entities would be added to the UN blacklist, subjecting them to a freeze,... and businesses will be banned from forming ventures with North Korean companies,... and making further investments in existing ventures.
There are also measures to restrict Pyongyang's imports of commercial products, which could be used for military purposes.
The document, however, does not include stronger measures under discussion such as a ban on oil exports -- which were opposed by China and Russia.
If passed, the resolution would be the seventh imposed on the regime.
